In Spring 2020 my partner Rhona Jack and I went on residency at Merz Gallery. We had intended to make a collaborative series of kinetic sculptures in response to the numerous defunct industries in the local area. However, the arrival of covid meant that we were largely confined to our living quarters and to Merz gallery nearby.
Unable to visit with locals and do normal research, we spent three months building kinetic drawing machines, designed to work with the wind. Alongside this and to create some element of public engagement, we installed drawings of our works on the outside wall of the gallery to create a weatherbeaten outdoor exhibition space.
